Legal Sovereignty in Canada’s North

In international law, when it comes to territory, if you don’t use it, you can lose it. As global warming makes the Northwest Passage more navigable and natural resources such as minerals, oils and natural gas more accessible, other countries have started questioning Canada’s claim to its northernmost territory. Prime Minister Stephen Harper conducted a tour of Canada’s North in late August to help make that claim. “We want to unleash this region’s potential and we are doing it by implementing the most ambitious northern agenda in Canadian history.”
